After successfully cycling your saltwater aquarium, it’s time to establish your filtration system. Filtration is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of your aquatic inhabitants, as well as to maintain the overall health and appearance of your tank. There are three primary types of filtration—biological, mechanical, and chemical—each serving a unique purpose in purifying and maintaining the water quality of your aquarium. By combining these filtration methods in various ways, you can create a customized filtration system that suits your specific saltwater aquarium needs. As you set up your filtration, consider selecting appropriate gear that aligns with your chosen filtration methods and the characteristics of your tank. Remember that refining and adjusting your filtration setup over time can contribute to the long-term success of your aquarium.

Aquarium filtration can be a topic of varying depth, depending on your desired level of understanding. While some enthusiasts opt for advanced gear and complex procedures, many hobbyists prefer a streamlined and efficient filtration system that’s both cost-effective and time-efficient. Striking the right balance is key—ensure simplicity without sacrificing the effectiveness of your filtration setup.

To guide you in creating an optimal setup, it’s essential to comprehend the three main types of filtration: biological, mechanical, and chemical.

Biological filtration holds great significance as it addresses the most prevalent toxin—fish waste. This filtration type involves cultivating live bacteria that metabolize waste and convert it into less harmful compounds, ultimately removed through other filtration methods or routine water changes. Essentially, these bacteria serve as your filtration workforce. To enhance biological filtration, ample surface area is crucial, provided by aquarium sand, rocks, and specialized biological media. Additionally, promoting efficient water flow through these surfaces ensures the bacteria’s effectiveness.

Mechanical filtration focuses on removing floating debris like uneaten food and waste particles from the water. The filter pad or sponge’s pore size determines what is captured; smaller pores catch more debris but necessitate more frequent cleaning. Balancing thoroughness and maintenance frequency is a personal choice that impacts your tank’s cleanliness.

Chemical filtration addresses compounds that can’t be managed solely by bacteria or mechanical filtration. While water changes assist in removing these compounds, chemical filtration, often utilizing activated carbon, is adept at tackling various chemicals and toxins. Activated carbon also eliminates odors and clarifies water color. Incorporating chemical filtration as part of your setup can significantly enhance water quality.

Understanding and implementing these filtration types will contribute to a healthier and more vibrant aquarium ecosystem.

HOB (Hang On Back) Filter: A straightforward filter that hangs on the side of your aquarium, primarily providing mechanical filtration. While it may have room for some chemical or biological media, I’d recommend it for aquariums up to around 10-15 gallons. Keep in mind that HOB filters are hard to conceal and can disrupt the clean aesthetic you might want.

AIO (All In One) Filter: Despite the name, an AIO filter involves a distinct compartment within your aquarium dedicated to filtration. It offers the advantage of centralizing filtration within the aquarium itself. This option is excellent for its simplicity and visual appeal, suitable for tanks up to approximately 30 gallons. For larger setups, consider opting for a sump.

Sump: Essentially a secondary aquarium situated beneath your display tank, a sump is designed to house all your filtration equipment and other concealed items. Among filtration methods, a sump offers tremendous versatility and space for filtration, though it is more complex and costly to set up.

Canister Filter: A blend between an HOB filter and a sump, canister filters are less common in saltwater setups due to their comparable cost to sumps while offering fewer benefits and flexibility. These can be a practical choice in specific scenarios, but their use is relatively limited.

Additionally, there are accessories that, depending on your configuration, can also serve as primary filtration components. These include reactors, scrubbers, refugiums, and sterilizers. Each of these accessories can play a role in enhancing your filtration setup based on your specific needs and preferences.

The nitrogen cycle encompasses the biogeochemical transformations that convert nitrogen into various chemical forms, facilitating its circulation among the atmosphere, terrestrial landscapes, and marine ecosystems. Despite the prevalence of nitrogen in the atmosphere, its availability for biological utilization is limited, resulting in a scarcity of accessible nitrogen across various ecosystems. This scarcity necessitates the involvement of bacteria or other processes to convert nitrogen into biologically usable forms.

Nitrogen plays a pivotal role in the sustenance of all life forms. It serves as a fundamental building block for cells, amino acids, proteins, and DNA. Additionally, nitrogen is a crucial component for the synthesis of chlorophyll, the pigment essential for photosynthesis—the process that sustains organisms like corals, macroalgae, and many marine species. While atmospheric nitrogen is abundant and can enter the Earth’s surface and oceans through a process known as “nitrogen fixation,” human activities such as agriculture and sewage contribute significantly to the influx of nitrogen into marine environments through waste disposal.

Both on land and in the ocean, the nitrogen cycle operates, albeit with distinct variations in the finer details.

Nitrogen gas (N2) constitutes a significant portion (78%) of Earth’s atmosphere, but it’s inaccessible for direct use by our bodies.

In ocean systems, N2 enters through atmospheric diffusion and runoff from land.

Nitrogen fixation entails assimilating atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into organic compounds, converting it into ammonium (NH4+), an organic form, through a process called ammonification.

Ammonium (NH4+) serves as a foundational building block for nitrogen-based compounds. While crucial for biochemical processes, it’s toxic to fish. Early in the saltwater cycle, an ammonia spike indicates bacteria’s conversion of N2 into NH4+.

NH4+ forms the “amino” component of amino acids, essential for protein synthesis involved in cell structure and enzyme reactions.

Plants, fungi, and bacteria can incorporate NH4+ into amino acids, structuring their cells. Consequently, organisms consuming these plants absorb amino acids.

All organisms produce nitrogen-based waste; for humans, it’s excreted as urine. Fish secrete ammonium (NH4+) waste through their gills.

From atmospheric nitrogen, ammonification yields NH4+. Nitrification ensues, converting NH4+ into nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-), achieved by nitrosomonas bacteria.

Nitrite (NO2-) is also toxic to fish. Nitrification progresses further as nitrobacter bacteria oxidize nitrite into nitrate (NO3-).

NO3- removal occurs through water changes or plant uptake. However, neither directly converts NO3- into N2.

Denitrification marks the cycle’s final stage. Anaerobic bacteria reduce nitrate (NO3-) to N2, concluding the process. Unlike earlier steps reliant on aerobic bacteria, this stage operates anaerobically.

Ideally, anaerobic bacteria would populate your saltwater aquarium, converting nitrate into nitrogen gas (N2) instead of relying on water changes or macroalgae.

Anaerobic bacteria thrive in extremely low oxygen environments, often found in deep sand beds or within porous rock formations within your tank.

Before introducing fish and corals, every new saltwater aquarium must undergo what’s known as the “nitrogen cycle.” There exist several approaches to facilitate this cycle, with potential for acceleration, yet an average waiting period of approximately 3 weeks should be anticipated for its completion. In this week’s content, we’ll delve into various tips, as well as things to avoid, offering insights on navigating this crucial phase.

Let’s not dive too deeply into the intricacies of biology and ecology, but it’s important to recognize that every natural aquatic ecosystem thrives on a multitude of bacteria that consume the toxic waste produced by larger organisms. However, in a new aquarium, the initial challenge lies in establishing a robust population of these beneficial bacteria. Failure to do so can result in a rocky start for your aquarium. Ensuring the ongoing health of these bacteria is equally critical, but that’s a topic for another discussion.

Typically, the cycling process spans about a month. However, this timeline can be influenced by the usage of certain products, potentially shortening or extending the cycle. Providing ample surface area for bacterial growth is beneficial, achieved through elements like sand, porous rock, and bio-media. To gauge the progress of your cycle, regular testing of ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels is essential.

The cycle is considered “complete” when ammonia and nitrites are at low levels, and nitrates fall within the range of 0 to 40 ppm.

Approach One (Dead Shrimp Technique)

The traditional approach involves acquiring a piece of deceased shrimp, preferably a larger one, and placing it within your aquarium. The shrimp serves as both a source of food and as a potential carrier of ocean-borne bacteria. To prevent decomposition, it’s wise to enclose the shrimp in a net or a glass container. While this method is straightforward, it’s not exceptionally rapid and does come with an odor.

Approach Two (Live Fish)

This method is somewhat contentious due to its potential impact on fish welfare. Essentially, it entails using robust fish species capable of enduring elevated levels of toxic compounds. These fish are then fed normally, providing sustenance for the developing bacteria. While it can expedite the cycling process, it often results in fish casualties. Additionally, even if the fish survive, they might not align with your intended aquarium inhabitants, necessitating their rehoming.

Approach Three (Fishless)

The most scientifically inclined technique involves the use of ammonia paired with bottled bacteria. Numerous companies offer products with user-friendly instructions for this purpose. This approach is likely the swiftest and least distressing for living beings involved.

Incorporating the Aquascape/Reef Rocks:

Begin by crafting your aquascape outside the confines of the aquarium. Once it’s crafted to your liking, carefully position it on the aquarium glass. This approach provides a stable foundation for the rocks.

Introducing the Sand:

Use a generous cup or even your hands to distribute the sand evenly around the aquascape. Keep in mind that the sand will naturally settle more once water is added, so you need not fuss too much during this step.

Adding the Saltwater:

Arguably the most pivotal step in sidestepping a massive dust storm within your aquarium. Numerous techniques can achieve this, including a gradual water addition. Alternatively, you can use a colander and/or a plastic bag to pour water gently onto the setup.

Incorporating Mechanical Filtration:

Prior to activating your pumps, insert your chosen filter sock or sponge. This precaution ensures that any residual sand dust is caught, ultimately clarifying your aquarium. Additionally, this practice safeguards your pumps and equipment from potentially harmful dust particles.

Arranging the Heater:

A straightforward task involves placing the heater in your sump, rear filtration compartment, or within the aquarium itself. Concealing it from view is preferable, while also ensuring that it resides in an area with adequate water flow. Equally important, confirm that the heater is properly calibrated and maintaining your desired temperature.

Installing the Return Pump:

Your specific model will dictate the setup of the return pump, so adhere to the accompanying manual. However, essential to this process is ensuring that the pump is appropriately connected to the return plumbing.

Setting Up the Auto Top Off (ATO):

Much like the return pump, the ATO setup varies based on the model, so adhere to the provided instructions. Remember to procure an appropriately sized water container for the ATO, tailored to your aquarium’s dimensions. While a basic 5-gallon bucket is a reliable choice, more sophisticated options are available.

Additional Insights:

Once your setup is operational, conduct a thorough assessment of all components. Verify that there are no leaks and exercise caution by refraining from activating your skimmer, UV sterilizer, or lights during the cycling phase.

Updated 2023

Crafting your own saltwater might initially seem perplexing or daunting, but the process is actually quite straightforward! You might have come across the option of purchasing saltwater from a nearby fish store. While that’s a valid choice, it tends to be more costly over the long haul, especially for larger tanks. Given that most saltwater enthusiasts perform water changes on a weekly to monthly basis, the volume of saltwater you’d use in a year can accumulate significantly.

Now, let’s delve into the savings potential of producing your own saltwater. For instance, when dealing with 200 gallons of saltwater, creating it yourself could save you approximately $115. Of course, this figure might vary based on your local store’s prices, but regardless, making your own saltwater will invariably prove more economical in the grand scheme of things. Take a moment to watch the video below and delve into the following details to discover the step-by-step process of crafting your own saltwater!

While creating saltwater is a relatively straightforward process, having the right equipment is essential for producing high-quality and efficient saltwater.

Salt Mix – Various types and brands of salt mix can be used, and they all tend to work well. If you’re uncertain, you can opt for the Red Sea Salt in the blue box, which is a dependable choice.

Food Grade Bucket or Trash Can – For smaller tanks (up to 30 gallons), a standard five-gallon bucket with a lid is suitable. For larger setups, we recommend a 20 or 32-gallon food grade Brute trash can equipped with wheels (dolly).

RO/DI Filter – Consider the MD Kleanwater 4-stage advanced RODI system, priced at $200. Alternatively, if your budget allows, the Aquamaxx Puratek Deluxe 4-stage system is a solid option. Never use tap water! If an RODI system isn’t feasible for you, you can purchase distilled water or RODI water from your local fish store.

Powerhead – Opt for a Newa mp 1200 or an equivalently strong powerhead. This assists in ensuring proper mixing of the salt within the water.

Heater – Any standard heater will suffice. MD offers options like Eheim Jager, ViaAqua, and Hydor glass heaters. These options are cost-effective yet effective in maintaining the desired temperature. Remember, the RODI water should be close in temperature to your aquarium water to maintain consistent salinity levels.

Refractometer – A refractometer is crucial for accurately measuring salinity. Different brands offer similar models that serve the same purpose effectively.

You can conveniently purchase pre-made RODI water from your local fish store or opt for distilled water from a grocery store.

Fill your chosen bucket or trash can with freshwater, leaving a few inches of space at the top to accommodate the addition of salt.

Insert the powerhead and heater into the container, then plug them in. Adjust the heater to match your aquarium’s temperature and strive to achieve a close match.

Adhere to the instructions on the salt mix package and estimate the required amount of salt. Gradually introduce the salt into the water using a measuring cup.

Take your time during the salt addition process, avoiding the sudden dumping of large quantities, which could result in precipitation. Precipitation can impact calcium and alkalinity levels, and even coat your pump and heater.

If a powerhead isn’t used, ensure consistent stirring of the water.

To help keep track, vocalize or otherwise note the number of the scoop you’re using, as it’s surprisingly easy to lose count. It’s normal for the water to appear slightly cloudy during this phase.

After a brief interval, employ a refractometer or salinity probe to test the water’s salinity. Adjust by adding more RO/DI water if the salinity is excessive, or more salt if it’s insufficient. Allow a few minutes for the adjustments to mix before retesting.

For optimal results, allow the newly mixed saltwater to blend for several hours, or even up to an entire day. Making a new batch right after a water change is advised for readiness in the coming week.

If you intend to use the freshly prepared saltwater immediately, ensure the temperature closely matches your aquarium’s, and that no unblended salt clumps remain.

Avoid adding salt directly into your aquarium, as it could harm or endanger your aquatic life.

To store saltwater for an extended period, follow these steps: Seal the container tightly to prevent evaporation, keep the container light-free to inhibit algae growth, store the container in a cool area, and consider leaving the powerhead and heater operational to maintain proper mixing, ensuring readiness in case of emergencies.

Updated 2023

Exploring Saltwater Aquarium Sand: Types, Significance, and Choices

In this edition, we delve into the realm of saltwater aquarium sand, uncovering its various types, crucial importance, and the diverse options at your disposal. Unlike conventional “land sand,” reef sand is composed of Calcium Carbonate (aragonite), imparting distinct qualities to it. While it might be easy to underestimate the significance of sand in a saltwater aquarium, it plays a pivotal role by providing stability, serving as a habitat for bacteria and critters. Let’s unravel the different sand varieties available to us as hobbyists, primarily differing in whether they arrive dry or “live,” as well as the grain size.
Beyond its decorative role, Saltwater Aquarium sand serves as a bustling habitat for an abundance of bacteria and vital critters, surpassing many other surfaces within your tank in this regard. While the significance of rocks and biological media for bacterial growth is well-known, the substantial contribution of sand is often underestimated. Although seasoned hobbyists may opt for “bare bottoms” without sand, this approach demands advanced filtration setups in their sumps. While eschewing sand does have certain merits, achieving a comparable setup without it demands greater investment of both finances and effort.

Moreover, the importance of sand extends to the well-being of certain fish and other inhabitants in your aquarium, as they rely on it for various purposes. The presence of sand at the tank’s base can also enhance the stability of some rocks, preventing potential tipping. Ultimately, we believe that an aquarium’s aesthetic appeal is incomplete without the inclusion of sand.

Within the realm of sand for your saltwater aquarium, a few distinct types exist, as we mentioned earlier. The crux of the matter revolves around the size of sand particles and whether it is supplied wet or dry. The presence of moisture in certain sand types is intentional, intended to introduce bacteria that facilitate the acceleration of your cycling process. Conversely, opting for dry sand generally offers a more economical choice and avoids potential pest-related concerns, although such pests are not typically a significant issue.

In most cases, unless specific circumstances dictate otherwise, it’s advisable to select sand with a grain size of approximately 1-2 mm. Grain sizes are typically outlined on websites and labels, negating the need to commit all the names to memory. While minutely-sized sand particles exude visual appeal, they can pose challenges, triggering sandstorms with minor disturbances or even due to your wavemakers’ action. On the other end of the spectrum, larger sand particles appear unnatural, trap debris and waste, and prove less effective in providing the inherent benefits associated with sand.

Our personal recommendation leans towards CaribSea’s Special Grade or Fiji Pink sand. Varieties with unique colors, such as the hints of pink in Fiji Pink, are available, and there’s even a black sand option. The choice ultimately rests with your preferences in this regard. Additionally, you can combine different sand types in your tank, although this might necessitate more preparation. On the contrary, with 1.0-2.0 mm sand, you can adopt a relatively carefree approach. Moreover, maintaining a sand layer of about 1-3 inches is ideal—anything less might not deliver the desired advantages, while exceeding this range could lead to more frequent maintenance and concerns about “anaerobic zones.”

Lastly, remember to conduct “gravel vacuuming” to keep your sand clean, but exercise caution not to overclean, as this can trigger issues. Establishing a monthly cleaning schedule is recommended, and a diligent cleanup crew might even spare you the need for regular manual intervention.

Essential Tools for Crafting Your Aquascape

The tools you’ll require depend on your ambitions for your aquascape’s precision and stability. If you’re content with rocks that won’t shift or tumble, intricate tools may not be essential. A rudimentary stack of rocks could suffice, necessitating no tools whatsoever. However, for those seeking to explore more elaborate and artistic avenues, consider having these tools within reach:

Saw

Reciprocating Saw (Sawzall)

Drill

Hammer

Chisel

Super glue, epoxy, or reef cement

Tape, cardboard, and paper

Solo cups, small boxes, or other objects for supporting rocks while cement or epoxy sets

Embark on Research and Exploration

Prior to embarking on your aquascaping journey, it’s prudent to venture online in search of inspiration. Delve into the virtual realm to discover a plethora of ideas. Explore natural landscapes that resonate with you, and peruse other aquariums adorned with captivating aquascapes. This endeavor not only fuels your creative sparks but also provides a reference point. By studying the techniques of fellow enthusiasts, you can draw valuable insights and potentially mirror their approaches. Instagram, forums, Facebook groups, and Google Images serve as treasure troves of aquatic wonders awaiting your discovery.

Pivotal Considerations in Aquascaping

As you embark on your aquascaping odyssey, several vital factors warrant contemplation. These considerations empower you to shape a composition that seamlessly aligns with your vision and nurtures the well-being of your aquatic habitat.

Defining Your Objective: Clarify your overarching goal. Are the rocks meant to be a distinctive art form, or do they serve as a canvas for coral adornments?

Rule of Thirds: Embrace the artistic principle of the rule of thirds. Apply this guideline to your aquascape, enhancing its aesthetic allure. For deeper insight, watch this enlightening video.

Flow Dynamics: Recognize the impact of rock placements on water flow patterns. Strategically position output, input, and wavemakers to circumvent the creation of stagnant zones where waste accumulates.

Lighting Impacts: Delve into the interplay between rocks and lighting distribution. Rocks nearer the water’s surface yield higher PAR levels for corals. Moreover, utilize rocks to conceal corals that thrive in shade or lower PAR zones.

Creating Dimensions: Introduce captivating dimensions into your arrangement. Establish isolated “islands” encircled by sand and open spaces to imbue your aquascape with depth and versatility. Islands cater to unique coral needs, while empty spaces generate depth and swimming areas.

Vertical and Horizontal Growth: Factor in the growth patterns of your corals. Avoid overcrowding by providing ample space on separate rocks for both vertical and horizontal coral expansion. Ensure rocks aren’t too close to the water’s surface.

Safe Havens: Carve out small caves, coves, and shelves within your aquascape. These niches offer sanctuary for your fish, alleviating stress and fostering a harmonious underwater environment.

Armed with these insights and considerations, you’re poised to embark on a journey of aquascaping mastery. Blend your creative intuition with these guiding principles to craft an aquascape that is both visually captivating and ecologically nurturing.

Creating a cardboard model of your aquarium is the essential first step. Working on this model prevents accidental glass breakage while experimenting in the actual tank.

Here’s how to proceed:

Cardboard Blueprint: Construct a cardboard replica of your aquarium. This model serves as your testing ground, enabling you to refine your design without endangering your tank.

Rock Arrangement: Lay out your reef rocks on a spacious blanket for easy accessibility. Having your rocks organized allows you to experiment seamlessly.

Tool Gathering: Collect the tools you’ll need for the job. Be prepared with saws, drills, hammers, chisels, and other essential items.

Visualize Your Vision: Examine the rocks and cultivate an overarching vision for your aquascape. Compare your aspirations with inspirations from diverse sources.

Innovative Shapes: If you opt for human-made reef rocks with unique shapes, the process becomes more convenient. These specialized shapes enhance your creative possibilities.

Strategic Stacking: Begin stacking pieces, examining the composition from various angles. Focus on the primary viewing angle, often the front of the aquarium.

Arches and Passageways: For intricate features like arches or swim-throughs, balance pieces or seek assistance from a friend to hold them in place as you evaluate.

Solid Foundation: For foundational elements, consider slightly arched pieces or affixing three feet using glue to elevate the structure above the substrate.

Evaluate and Refine: Once satisfied with the aquascape’s arrangement, step away for a few hours. Return later to ensure your contentment. Repeat this process over several days for meticulous refinement.

Fine-Tuning: Use a saw or chisel to adjust portions of the rock. If the rock doesn’t break as desired, don’t fret—glue can rectify it.

Secure Connection: To unite sizable components, opt for epoxy or cement. When using cement, employ gloves and stir small batches for manageable application.

Cement Application: Apply cement sparingly, sculpting pieces together rather than merely adhering them. Conceal unsightly seams with glue and rubble rock.

Epoxy for Precision: For precise connections, rely on epoxy. Keep in mind that even after cementing, the connection remains breakable—handle pieces with care during tank placement.

Final Scape Inspection: If unsatisfied with the aquascape, make changes now. A well-crafted design will enhance your satisfaction for years to come.

Safe Transfer: Move the scape into the tank cautiously to avoid scratching the glass or dropping rocks. Place rocks directly on the glass for stability.

Balancing Act: Ensure stability, as sand sifters and snails can unsettle an unbalanced tank. Place rocks directly on the glass, not on sand.

Simplicity Shines: Avoid excessive complexity. A well-executed, balanced design often surpasses intricate but chaotic arrangements.

Embark on this aquascaping journey with patience and creativity. By following these steps and considering the well-being of your aquarium inhabitants, you’ll craft an aquascape that enriches your tank’s aesthetic appeal and ecological harmony.

Unveiling the Essence of Reef Rock

The term “Reef Rock” carries profound significance, underlining the fact that not all rocks are suitable for a saltwater aquarium. In fact, it’s strongly advised against using just any random rock. This caution is warranted due to the potential presence of contaminants and the unique benefits that authentic reef rock offers—benefits that other rocks cannot replicate.

Reef rocks are primarily composed of aragonite, a type of calcium carbonate. They are either naturally sourced from quarries, oceans, or crafted through human intervention. Being essentially ancient coral skeletons, they exhibit chemical compatibility with saltwater environments and boast high porosity. This porosity offers an ample habitat for beneficial filtering bacteria and other microorganisms. Ensuring space for these vital inhabitants is pivotal for the well-being of your aquarium, with reef rocks being an optimal solution.

Terminology Decoded

Let’s clarify the terms that might cause confusion. Rocks can be classified as wet or dry. Wet rocks are often referred to as “live rock” due to their colonization by bacteria and organisms, expediting aquarium maturation. Conversely, dry rocks can be either artificially produced or extracted from quarries, having never been in an ocean or aquarium environment. The majority of rocks available for purchase fall under the category of dry rocks.

In the past, “dry-live rock” was prevalent—formerly live rock that was dried out. These rocks, however, retained significant organic matter that could lead to future problems. It’s advisable to avoid this type of rock unless you’re prepared to take extra precautions to ensure safety. When in doubt about the rock’s terminology or origin, refer to the product description for clarifications.

Origins of Reef Rock

As previously mentioned, reef rocks can be sourced through artificial means, quarries, or direct extraction from oceans. Previously, ocean-sourced live rock wasn’t sustainable, as it involved destructive practices damaging existing reefs. However, the landscape has shifted, and current live rock is either matured dry rock from aquariums or placed in the ocean for a few months before harvesting.

Multifaceted Functions

The paramount role of reef rock is to provide a habitat for essential bacteria that contribute to water filtration. While reducing the amount of rock for aesthetic reasons is possible, alternative solutions like media blocks need to be employed. Furthermore, reef rock offers shelter for various critters, from copepods to small worms and crabs. This biodiversity is integral for the long-term health of your aquarium.

Additionally, fish and invertebrates require spaces for hiding, resting, and coexisting. Without proper rock structures, issues like bullying and stress can emerge, and corals lack suitable placement. Ultimately, reef rocks contribute to the aesthetic charm of your aquarium, transforming it into a slice of captivating natural beauty.

Weighing the Pros and Cons of Wet “Live” Reef Rock

Pros:

The standout advantage of wet reef rocks lies in the wealth of potential bacteria, critters, and microorganisms they bring. This infusion can almost instantly mature your aquarium, boasting more biodiversity than even many established aquariums equipped with sterile dry reef rocks. While this might seem like a single benefit, its impact on your saltwater aquarium’s health and vibrancy cannot be underestimated.

Cons:

Several downsides accompany wet reef rock usage, with the primary concern being the potential for unwelcome hitchhikers. Although the rock offers diverse biodiversity, not every inhabitant will be beneficial. While not a major issue, it implies preparedness to manage pests and a need to proceed cautiously before introducing desired corals and fish. Additionally, working with live rock can limit your aquascape creativity. The less predictable shapes and the need to keep the rock submerged to preserve its vitality can hinder intricate scaping. Lastly, wet reef rock is pricier than dry rock, making it less suitable for those on a budget.

Exploring the Pros and Cons of Dry Reef Rock

Pros:

For many, the most significant advantage of dry reef rock is the absence of pests and other potential nuisances. While it lacks the immediate biodiversity of wet rock, it spares you from grappling with various potential issues. The dry nature of the rock also provides ample time and room for creative aquascaping. With the aid of tools, cement, or epoxy, you can fashion stunning, intricate scapes. Furthermore, dry rock is more cost-effective, allowing you to acquire substantial quantities without straining your budget.

Cons:

The primary drawback of dry reef rock is its lack of inherent biodiversity. It takes time, typically a few months, for the rock to mature, and even then, it won’t match the vitality of wet live rock sourced from the ocean.

Exploring Rock Shapes

A diverse array of reef rock shapes exists, particularly within the domain of dry rocks. Recently, some companies have ventured into crafting rocks with specialized shapes to simplify the aquascaping process.

Examples include:

Base Rocks with flat bottoms for convenient placement.

Shelf Rocks with flatter tops, maximizing coral placement areas.

Branching rocks for intricate aesthetics and enhanced coral placement.

Pre-shaped rocks like arches or ones with holes, expediting captivating scaping.

Reef rock rubble, comprising small rock fragments useful for various purposes.

Reef rock “trees,” assemblies of rocks interconnected by rods to create vertical structures.

Guidance for Rock Purchase

Procuring reef rock is a straightforward endeavor. MarineDepot offers an extensive array of options. You can explore wet reef rock options online, ensuring you choose from reliable sources. Visiting your local fish store is also beneficial, allowing you to inspect the rocks in person before making a decision.

Innovation in rock designs includes a spectrum of sizes, shapes, and even colors like purple-pink. The “1 pound per 1 gallon” guideline aids in determining the required quantity, yet obtaining more than necessary can simplify the aquascaping process.

Lastly, invest in reef-safe epoxy or cement to achieve a stable and visually appealing aquascape.

Curing “Dry-Live Rock”

Should you acquire dry rock that was previously alive, such as from other hobbyists, a special process is recommended. Quarantine the rock in a container like a Brute trash can, utilizing a wavemaker and heater in saltwater. It’s crucial to shield the rock from light to enable the disposal of dead material through a natural “processing” period.

Research and Reviews

When you’re doing your research never trust one person or one community (one Facebook group, forum, YouTube channel. This applies more when you are looking up an issue with your saltwater aquarium or asking for advice about advanced things.

Don’t get too excited or disregard gear quickly after reading one or two reviews, people who leave reviews are often the minority of hobbyists. Make sure to at least read multiple reviews, but asking in big reefing groups will probably give you a more accurate “gear review”.

Reach out to people with a “resume” sometimes that means scientists, but more often we are just talking about people with aquariums that are successful and established. Time in the hobby alone doesn’t make an expert, but a 10 year veteran with a 400 gallon aquarium full of healthy coral probably knows a thing or two!

Patience and Not Freaking Out

One of the things we all as hobbyists struggle with the most is not being overly reactive when we start seeing issues. Most issues in this hobby are not sudden, but rather a build up of bad habits or just something you weren’t aware of. A common phrase we have is that “nothing good in an aquarium happens quickly” so don’t expect to fix whatever issue you have in a day or a week!

Similarly, you have to have patience after you setup your saltwater aquarium, as the biological processes that ultimately make our aquariums successful will take time. Some really dedicated hobbyists will slowly “mature” their tank over the course of a year before they start adding in the corals and other animals that they want. You should expect your aquarium to at least take a month before it is anywhere near the maturity level for a healthy system.

Never put in any animals before the Nitrogen Cycle is complete. We have covered how to check if your cycle is complete before!

Another quick tip is to not constantly tinker with all your gear. Ultimately what you need to do is find a good parameter for all your gear (good lighting intensity/spectrum, filtration protocol, etc.) and stick to that as stability is the number one thing you need to succeed!

Money and Purchasing Habits

This is fairly simple, but don’t underestimate the initial costs of this hobby. It can be way more than you think, but it isn’t an extraordinarily expensive hobby, you just buy most of your gear all at the start.

When buying gear, don’t necessarily trust that expensive gear will always be the better gear for you. Go more based off your goals and reviews of fellow hobbyists. More important is to get reliable gear with a good reputation. Worse than getting unnecessary expensive gear, is going super cheap on important gear. Sure it might work fine for a relatively long time. At best it looks ugly and at worst it is inefficient and will break any minute.

Don’t buy a small aquarium (under 10 gallons) just because it is cheaper. It may seem counterintuitive but such small aquariums require a lot of skill and work to keep stable. If you can’t afford a 15-30 gallon aquarium at the moment, its always better to just wait and save up your money.

Livestock Choices

Impulse buying fish or corals as an unexperienced beginner is a HUGE mistake that we all will make more than once. However, it is often a really bad idea if its a coral or fish you have never heard about. Do your research before buying any livestock!

When you buy new livestock, its a good idea to do a quarantine protocol (and to have a quarantine setup available). However, make sure you don’t accidentally overdose medicine or use the wrong medicines.

Don’t buy finicky fish unless you dedicate a lot of research and specific gear to them. If it is a tedious fish to take care of, just don’t do it as you will eventually get tired or start slacking. Try to make sure you never accidentally turn the hobby into a part-time job!

As we say a lot, plan out your aquarium well ahead of time and have an idea of the corals, anemones, and fish you can support! We sometimes see hobbyists putting in livestock that won’t fit in their aquarium or won’t be compatible with other animals, which always leads to grief.

Add in livestock slowly if you can, as adding in a ton of animals all at once won’t give your filtration system enough time to react, and may lead to issues.

Finally, don’t overfeed corals and fish, and make sure to vary your food choices. Don’t get cheap food or food in bulk. Getting food in bulk will make it more likely that you will overfeed or it will expire before you use it up. Just like us, these animals need variety in their diet to be healthy and look good. As well, overfeeding (especially with cheap food) will very quickly cause a ton of issues.

Filtration

The first step in filtering your saltwater aquarium is making sure the freshwater you use to make your saltwater and top off your aquarium is perfectly clean. This means getting an RO/DI filter! There are always exceptions, but in the vast majority of cases we suggest you get one, as it pays off pretty quickly. You could use tap water with dechlorinator, but that is just asking for a ton of issues as you have no idea what else could be in your tap water.

Overusing chemical filtration and over filtering as a whole. The goal is not to have 0 nitrates or phosphates, just low levels. It is very possible to over filter and cause harm that way.

Not being consistent with your water changes is probably the biggest mistake you can make, as we always say that stability is the most important. A strict water change routine and schedule is a large part of maintaining stability.

Finally, make sure you get enough biologically media and get a decent amount of sand (DON’T go bare-bottom) The bacteria mainly lives on “surfaces” rather than the water so you need to have adequate surface area for the bacteria to live on and sand provides a ton of it.

Lighting

Having light that is too strong or has too much in the red and green spectrum will make it more likely that you either overwhelm corals and/or cause more algae to grow than normally would. Get a lighting schedule and spectrum from a more experience hobbyist or feel free to reach out to us and we can help!

Only keep your lights on (at full intensity) for at most 8 hours a day, and if your light doesn’t have a built in timer, get a mechanical timed outlet to accomplish a set lighting schedule.

Maintenance and Testing

Don’t vacuum your sandbed too much, it may look dirty for a while, but only clean stuff up from the top of the sand, let the sand settle! You can still vacuum it, just don’t do it on a weekly basis.

Don’t skip water changes unless you just have to, and try to get it done before or after!

NEVER top off the aquarium with saltwater instead of freshwater! When the saltwater evaporates, the salt remains just the water leaves, meaning your water can become way too salty.

Water changes can be tedious and take a bit of time, but never fully walk away from your aquarium while water is going in or out. There are tons of stories of flooding the house during a water change, or even more scary is drying out your aquarium and killing your animals!

Thoroughly wash and rinse your hands before putting them into your water, especially important in smaller aquariums where any chemicals on your hands could cause issues.

Try not to clean your aquarium glass with strong cleaning chemicals, nor should you spray stuff like Febreze near the aquarium!

Finally, don’t forget to test your water as often as possible! Once a week is preferable but once a month is the minimum. Often, testing the waters are the only way to catch issues and bad trends before they become serious problems and cost you losses! Also, be aware that you may need to test for calcium and alkalinity when you start getting more corals.

Other Mistakes

Don’t use metal fittings and/or hose clamps as they will rust, basically keep metal out of your aquariums.

When making RO/DI water, set timers or other ways to make sure you don’t forget and cause a flood!

When cleaning your glass, watch out for sand particles getting in between, as they can scratch your glass.

You can get away without a lid, but if you can, get a lid so that you don’t have to worry about your fish jumping out, or about any other pets jumping in!

Finally, make sure your have good organization. This includes having organized wires of all your gear, keeping your water change gear in one spot, etc. As well, attached your power strip either to the wall or inside the wall of the aquarium stand, so that it isn’t resting on the floor. If there is ever a minor flood from aquarium related things, the electrics will be safer.

Bonus tip: dust and wipe down your gear every once in a while, it will also make you look closely at your gear often so you can catch if there is an issue.

Verifying Your Equipment

While we’ve rarely encountered missing gear or product issues, oversights can occur, especially with larger orders. If you’ve acquired an array of items, it’s prudent to meticulously cross-reference the packing list with your order receipt. Confirm the presence of each item, and ensure that it matches the intended model. Should you find something amiss, promptly reach out to the retailer to rectify the situation.

Inspect for Potential Damage

Once you’re assured of having all your gear, meticulously unpack each item and scrutinize it for any signs of damage. Shipping mishaps are not unheard of, and given the fragility of certain items – such as aquariums and glass heaters – it’s crucial to be thorough. Obvious indicators of damage include compromised packaging or any visible breakage. Take particular care in evaluating your aquarium’s condition. Examine it closely for scratches, chips, or damaged silicone. Even minor imperfections can escalate into major concerns over time, so it’s essential not to overlook any potential issues.

Assembling Your Gear

With the verification and damage assessment completed, proceed to assemble your gear if necessary. As you assemble, any issues that may have evaded your initial check could come to light. The most substantial assembly task may involve the aquarium stand. Typically, this process is straightforward, often requiring around an hour and standard tools. Some aquariums might even arrive with the stand pre-assembled, simplifying this step.

Now that you’ve successfully assembled your aquarium stand and gathered the remaining gear, it’s time to select the optimal placement for your aquarium. While aesthetic harmony with your room’s design is crucial, there are technical considerations that deserve attention to ensure a successful setup. After all, relocating a fully set up aquarium can be an enormous undertaking.

Windows

Placing your aquarium near windows necessitates careful consideration of two key factors.

Firstly, assess the amount of sunlight the aquarium will receive. Excessive sunlight can trigger troublesome algae growth and lead to overheating. While brief periods of indirect sunlight are generally acceptable, prolonged exposure may necessitate repositioning your saltwater aquarium.

Secondly, older or poorly insulated windows may allow rapid temperature fluctuations, compromising the stability vital to your aquarium’s inhabitants.

Electrical Outlets

For anything other than a petite aquarium, dedicating a dedicated outlet for the aquarium is paramount. Placing the outlet discreetly behind the aquarium allows for effective cable management.

Be mindful of your outlet’s capacity – typically 15 Amp (1800 Watt) or 20 Amp (2400 Watt). Smaller aquariums won’t usually approach these limits, but high-power devices like toasters or vacuums could trip the circuit breaker. In older homes with outdated wiring, consulting an electrician to ensure adequate electrical support at the chosen spot is advisable.

Heating and Cooling

Given the prevalence of central heating and cooling, proximity to sources of significant heat or cold is inadvisable. Such placement can result in temperature fluctuations, particularly detrimental to smaller aquariums.

Aquarium Noise

The auditory output of an aquarium varies in impact from person to person. While some find it negligible, others invest extra effort and resources to minimize noise. If noise sensitivity is a concern, situating the aquarium in a quieter room is a straightforward solution. Modern aquarium setups are generally quiet, but if placed in a bedroom or office, discernible vibrations could affect those who prefer silence.

Utility Room/Sink Proximity

While not essential, placing your aquarium close to a utility room or sink can greatly simplify maintenance. Having a designated space for cleaning equipment and discarding water can streamline aquarium care. Although this aspect isn’t paramount, it can certainly enhance the convenience of managing your saltwater aquarium.

Opt for a counter near a sink if you want easy access for filling and emptying, but keep in mind you’ll need to fill it twice to level the tank.

Fill the aquarium to the brim with tap water, including both the display and rear filtration chamber.

Thoroughly dry the exterior of the aquarium with a towel, repeating the process to ensure no residual water remains from filling.

Wait approximately 30 minutes, then closely examine each seam where the glass panels meet. Check visually and by touch. If you detect any moisture, dry the area with a towel, wait another 30 minutes, and check again. If it remains wet, there may be a problem.

Use a siphon to empty the tap water, dry with a clean towel, and allow any remaining water to evaporate.

If you suspect a leak, immediately contact Marine Depot or your retailer for further guidance.

Leveling Your Aquarium:

Clean the top of the stand and bottom of the aquarium to ensure no debris or issues are present.

Place the aquarium on the stand in its permanent location.

Fill the aquarium halfway with tap water; this provides adequate pressure to reveal leveling issues while making it more manageable.

Position a level from left to right at the front of the aquarium, measuring the level at the front, middle, and rear.

Obtain composite shims (plastic, not wooden) and have about 3 on hand.

With the ribbed side facing down, gently slide a shim under the stand until the leveling issue is corrected. Proceed slowly to avoid overadjusting.

Do not place shims between the aquarium and the stand.

Check for levelness from left to right. Then, place the level from front to back on the left side and measure the left, middle, and right sides.

Repeat the shim-adjustment process from front to back, ensuring that shims do not slide into one another.

Verify levelness, possibly by adding more water to the aquarium.

If needed, double up shims by placing one on top of another. If inserting them proves challenging, insert one shim and then slide the second underneath it using a hammer.

Fill the aquarium and rear filtration chamber to the top.

Confirm levelness and stability; gently shake the stand to check its stability.

To finalize the shims’ position, snap a shim by pulling it straight up. If needed, use a flat tool like a spatula or putty knife.

Drain the tap water and prepare for the final setup of your saltwater aquarium.

Note: Avoid bumping the aquarium or stand while empty, as it may disrupt alignment and necessitate re-leveling. Additionally, the aquarium might “settle,” particularly if placed on carpet. Conduct a final leveling of the stand after the tank is fully filled with water.
