My First Fish Tank Study Guides

Learn the animals you will actually see in the hobby.

Choose a deck, flip through the cards, and get comfortable recognizing common fish, corals, macroalgae, cleanup-crew animals, and other invertebrates. These cards are a starting point—not the last thing you should read before buying an animal.
How it works: The front is the identification side. Press Flip card to see the name, basic care facts, and the biggest thing I want you to know.

Canary blenny

Meiacanthus oualanensis Bright yellow, active, and usually peaceful—the big detail beginners miss is that this is a venomous fang blenny.
Adult size11–13 cm
TemperamentPeaceful
DietOmnivore
Reef safetyReef safe
Care levelModerate
What I want you to know: The venomous bite is defensive, but it still matters. Give it rockwork, feed it more than once a day, and avoid similarly shaped blennies.

What I want you to know: It can live alone or in a group, but introduce a group together—and remember that a larger Chalk bass may view a very small shrimp as food.
