How to Calculate Aquarium Water Volume
Enter the tank’s inside length, width, and actual water height for the best estimate. For a rectangular aquarium, volume begins with length × width × water height. The calculator converts that measurement into US gallons and liters, then applies your selected estimate for the space occupied by rock and equipment.
Use inside measurements whenever possible. Exterior dimensions include the thickness of the glass or acrylic, and most aquariums are not filled completely to the rim. Sand, reef rock, pumps, overflows, and other equipment also reduce the amount of water the display actually holds.
Why Actual Aquarium Volume Matters
A realistic water-volume estimate helps you plan water changes, select appropriately sized equipment, and avoid dosing or medicating based only on the tank’s advertised capacity. If your system includes a sump, calculate the sump’s operating water separately and add it to the estimated display volume.
