A compatibility chart can tell you that two fish might live together. It cannot see your tank, your rockwork, the way you feed, or the personality of the actual fish you bring home. I want you to plan the entire fish list first, look for the combination most likely to cause trouble, and decide which fish should go in first and which should go in last.

“Peaceful” Is Not a Complete Compatibility Test

I want you to leave this page knowing more than which fish somebody on the internet says will get along. You should know where each fish is likely to spend its time, how it will get enough food, which one may claim the most territory, and what you will do if two fish simply do not work together.

Species matters, but so do sex, age, shelter, tank size, nearby competitors, and the personality of the individual fish. That is why a combination that works beautifully in one aquarium can fail in another.

Plan the entire list firstDo not buy Fish #1 until you have thought about Fish #3 or Fish #4. The first fish can limit every choice that comes later.
Look for overlapping needsTwo fish may both be labeled peaceful and still compete for the same cave, sand patch, food, or social role.
Keep the plan reversibleA divider, acclimation box, spare system, retailer return agreement, or rehoming contact turns a bad interaction into a manageable problem.

Eight things to compare

There Is More to Compatibility Than Temperament

Ask these eight questions about every fish you are considering. One major problem can be enough to rule out an otherwise appealing fish.

Adult size

Use the adult size of the exact species, not the cute little juvenile in the store. Also think about how it swims. A long, active swimmer needs a very different tank from a fish that spends most of its time near one cave.

Where it spends its time

Does the fish cruise through open water, hover above the rock, perch, burrow in the sand, or stay near a cave? Fish that use different parts of the aquarium are less likely to be in each other’s way all day.

Hiding places and territory

Make sure there are enough useful hiding places and breaks in the line of sight. More rock is not automatically better. The rock needs to create separate areas without taking away all the swimming room.

One fish, a pair, or a group?

Find out whether the species should be kept alone, as a properly chosen pair, or in a real group. “Buy three” is not a safe default. Sex, size, age, and the pecking order can completely change how the fish behave together.

Aggression and predation

Separate territorial chasing from predation. A fish can be too large to eat and still be relentlessly harassed. Another can be calm with fish yet hunt ornamental shrimp or other invertebrates.

Food and feeding speed

Make sure you know what the fish eats and how it eats. A shy or slow fish can lose weight in a tank full of fast, pushy eaters even when nobody is visibly attacking it.

Coral and invertebrate interactions

“Reef safe” needs context. Ask whether the fish may nip coral, move sand onto coral, eat shrimp or snails, disturb a clam, or change behavior as it grows.

Jumping and your backup plan

Find out whether the fish needs a tight-fitting lid and think about how difficult it would be to catch later. Before you buy the riskiest fish, know whether you could isolate it, return it, or find it another home.

“How many fish?” and “Which fish?” are two different questions. Your filtration may be able to process the waste from four fish, but the aquarium may not have enough room for those four particular fish to live together. Where Will Each Fish Actually Live?

We tend to compare fish by name. The fish do not care about names. They care about open water, caves, sand, perches, current, shelter, and a place to escape. Sketch the front of your aquarium and mark where each fish is likely to spend most of its time. If several fish end up in the same cave or bottom corner, rethink the list—even if a compatibility chart calls all of them peaceful.

  • Open-water swimmers need uninterrupted horizontal room.
  • Hovering fish need a secure retreat close to their preferred position.
  • Burrowing fish need suitable substrate and stable rockwork.
  • Perching fish may overlap with other fish that defend the rock face.
  • Territorial fish may claim far more than the cave where they sleep.

Ask What Each Fish Will Do to the Other

Do not stop at, “Will Fish A attack Fish B?” Fish B may steal Fish A’s food, take over its cave, or keep it hiding. Use this table to think through both sides of the relationship.

Which fish goes in first?

“Least Aggressive First” Is a Good Start, but It Is Not the Whole Answer

Adding the calmer fish first can give it time to find food and a hiding place before a territorial fish arrives. But no stocking order can make two fundamentally incompatible fish work together.

Shy, deliberate, or easily displaced fish

Give cautious fish time to establish a retreat, accept prepared food, and become visible before adding a more assertive feeder or territorial neighbor.

Order depends on the plan

Pairs, burrow partners, and same-species groups

The correct sequence may depend on sex, size, bonded status, or whether animals must be introduced together. Research the exact social plan rather than applying a universal rule.

Usually later

Territorial or highly assertive fish

Adding the most likely territory owner later can reduce its advantage. It does not guarantee peace, especially when space is tight or the same resources are still contested.

Stocking-order myths to avoid

  • “Add aggressive fish last and everything will work.” Order cannot overcome predation, inadequate adult space, or incompatible social structures.
  • “Add all the fish together so nobody owns territory.” This creates a large biological and social change at once and removes your chance to observe each addition.
  • “Rearrange the rock and the problem is solved.” A new layout can interrupt territory, but it does not change species behavior or create unlimited room.
  • “A small fish is a peaceful fish.” Body size does not tell you how strongly a fish will defend a cave, mate, or food source.

Tank size changes everything

Choose Fish for the Aquarium You Actually Own

A fish list that works in a 45-gallon aquarium may be ridiculous in a 15-gallon aquarium. Start with the real size and shape of your tank before you fall in love with a fish at the store.

Worked planning example

One Possible JBJ RF-45 Fish List

This is an example, not a guaranteed shopping list. The source, sex, size, health, aquascape, and personality of the actual fish still matter.The idea: choose three fish that use different parts of the aquarium, avoid obvious predators, and add the fish most likely to become territorial last.Possible order: firefish → yellow watchman goby → one captive-bred ocellaris clownfish.

Highest-risk interaction: the clownfish may expand its territory and repeatedly displace a calmer fish. The firefish also requires a genuinely secure cover.

1Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica)

Role: hovers above the rock and needs a secure hiding place. Why first: give this shy fish time to find a secure hiding place and start eating before adding a pushier fish. Verify: a tight-fitting lid with no escape gaps, enough shelter, and peaceful tankmates.

2Yellow watchman goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)

Role: spends most of its time near the bottom and uses a burrow. Why second: let the goby settle near the bottom after the firefish has already found its own hiding place. Verify: stable rockwork, the right substrate, and a feeding plan that makes sure food reaches the goby.

3Captive-bred ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris)

Role: the most visible fish in this example and the one most likely to claim a territory. Why last: give the calmer fish time to settle before the clownfish chooses its favorite corner. Verify: whether you want one clownfish or a properly chosen pair, and how much territory the fish claims as it matures.

Why this is not a recipe
Even this deliberately separated plan can fail if two fish choose the same retreat, one stops eating, or the clownfish defends more space than expected.
Before adding the next fishMake sure the fish already in the tank are eating normally and are not being chased, hiding constantly, injured, or losing weight.

Decide before there is a problem

Know What You Will Do If Two Fish Do Not Get Along

“Wait and see” is not much of a plan. Before you buy the fish, know how you would separate it, return it, or find it another home.

ObserveIdentify normal feeding, breathing, swimming, resting, and territory for each fish so change is visible early.
InterruptHave an acclimation or isolation box, divider, or separate stable system available when appropriate.
ReturnKnow the retailer’s live-animal and return policies before purchase. Do not assume a store can take the fish back.
RehomeIdentify a qualified local aquarist, service, store, or appropriately sized system before the situation becomes urgent.
Harassment is also a health problem. Repeated hiding, missed feeding, rapid breathing, torn fins, or continuous chasing deserves action. Use the fish-health decision process to separate environmental stress and injury from a disease or treatment decision.
