Do you actually need a protein skimmer?
Not every beginner aquarium needs one. On a lightly stocked nano tank, regular water changes, sensible feeding, mechanical filtration, and good gas exchange may be enough. A protein skimmer becomes more useful when the bioload increases, nutrients are difficult to control, feeding is heavy, or you want the added aeration and organic-waste removal.
I would not force a weak nano skimmer into a cramped chamber simply because reef tanks are “supposed” to have skimmers. If the tank is stable without one, save the space. If it needs real help, choose a model that physically fits and has enough reaction volume to matter.

Measure the installation—not just the skimmer body
A compact footprint does not guarantee a skimmer will work. Measure the chamber width and depth, normal operating water level, tank rim thickness, space above the aquarium for removing the collection cup, and clearance behind the tank. Make sure the magnet can sit where you need it and that the air intake, pump, and cup remain accessible for cleaning.
Expect a break-in period, changing foam after foods or additives, and occasional microbubbles. Mark the correct water level, clean the air intake and neck, and do not oversize the skimmer. A skimmer that cannot maintain a stable foam head may collect less waste than a correctly sized smaller model.
