The goal is not to make the rear chamber or sump look brand new. The goal is to remove the waste you can reach, restore normal flow, and put everything back without turning routine maintenance into a complete aquarium teardown.

That distinction matters. A little detritus in a quiet corner is normal. A chamber packed with debris, a clogged intake, rising water level, weak return flow, or a pump struggling to restart deserves attention. But draining and scrubbing every surface at once can create more risk than the dirt you were trying to remove.

When Does a Sump or Rear Chamber Need Cleaning?

I do not clean these areas just because a calendar says it is the first Saturday of the month. I inspect them and look for a reason.

What You Should Not Clean All at Once

A sump or rear chamber holds more than equipment. It also holds surfaces covered with bacteria and other life. Some of that biological filtration lives on rock, ceramic media, sponges, and every wet surface in the system.

I would not combine a complete chamber scrub, new filter media, a deep sandbed cleaning, major rockwork changes, and a large water change unless there is a specific emergency plan behind it. For normal maintenance, spread big jobs out.

How I Clean a Sump or Rear Filter Chamber

Choose the one job you are doing today

Decide exactly what you are trying to clean before unplugging anything. Are you removing a debris pile, changing mechanical filtration, cleaning a pump intake, wiping a sensor, or doing a larger chamber service? A specific job is easier to finish and restart correctly.

Take pictures before you move anything

Take pictures of the water level, equipment placement, tubing, valves, cords, and any settings you may need to restore. If the system sounds or flows differently after the job, these notes give you something real to compare.

Turn off only the equipment affected by the job

Turn off anything that could run dry, overflow, dose into a stopped system, or interfere with the work. That may include the return pump, heater, ATO, skimmer, dosing pumps, UV, reactor, or controller program. The list depends on your aquarium.

Count what you turn off. If six devices stop, six devices need a deliberate restart check.

Keep the equipment and media in the correct order

Work from the easiest pieces toward the harder ones. Keep screws, lids, baskets, and tubing together. Put biological media in aquarium water. Do not leave a pump, heater, or wet sensor where it can fall, dry out, or be stepped on.

Siphon the waste you can reach

Use a small hose or utility pump to remove settled detritus while you remove aquarium water. A turkey baster can move waste out of a corner and toward the siphon. Do not blast debris into the display or grind sand and snails through a pump.

You do not need to make every surface look brand new. Remove the loose waste, open any blocked flow, and clean the equipment that actually needs it.

Put everything back in the original order

Use your photos. Confirm that baskets sit flat, pump intakes are clear, heaters are submerged correctly, sensors face the right direction, tubing is not kinked, and cords have safe drip loops. Restore valves and controller settings to their recorded positions.

Restart everything and watch the aquarium

Refill to the correct operating level with prepared saltwater, then restart the system in the order required by your equipment. Watch the display, overflow, rear chambers, sump, return outlets, plumbing, and floor until water levels stabilize.

Verify normal flow, sound, temperature, salinity, ATO behavior, skimmer behavior, and dosing state. Check again after a few minutes. A pump that sounds different or a fitting that drips only under pressure deserves attention now.

How to Clean an All-in-One Rear Filter Chamber

An all-in-one aquarium hides its filtration behind the display. Water normally passes through an overflow or intake, through mechanical and biological filtration, and into a return-pump chamber. The exact order varies, so follow the layout of your tank.

  1. Change or rinse the filter sock, pad, floss, or sponge as its instructions require.
  2. Check whether the water level returns to normal before doing anything larger.
  3. Unplug the return pump, heater, ATO, and other affected equipment.
  4. Remove media baskets and accessible equipment one piece at a time.
  5. Keep biological media wet in aquarium water. Swish it gently only when loose debris is blocking flow.
  6. Use a narrow siphon to remove detritus from the bottom of each accessible chamber.
  7. Wipe the walls, baffles, overflow teeth, and sensor surfaces only as needed.
  8. Reinstall the media in the correct order, refill, restart, and verify the return-section level.
Do not “fix” a low return chamber by blindly adding fresh water. In an all-in-one tank, a clogged filter or changed flow can move water between chambers. Confirm salinity, blockage, and normal operating level before changing the amount of water in the system.

How to Clean a Sump Below the Aquarium

A sump adds more water, more equipment, and more plumbing. It also gives you room to work. The biggest difference is that shutting off the return pump sends water back down from the display and plumbing, so the sump water level will rise.

  1. Photograph the normal running level, valve positions, controller settings, and every connection you expect to touch.
  2. Confirm the sump has enough empty space for normal drain-down before shutting off the return pump.
  3. Pause the return pump and affected devices. Close an ATO reservoir outlet or otherwise secure top-off water when the manufacturer requires it for maintenance.
  4. Let the system finish draining to its normal power-off level.
  5. Service filter socks, rollers, skimmer parts, reactors, sensors, and pumps according to their own instructions.
  6. Remove accessible debris from each compartment. Work around plumbing instead of forcing it.
  7. Reinstall equipment, reopen any valve you intentionally closed, refill to the correct running volume, and restart.
  8. Watch the overflow and sump until the running level stabilizes. Check every union, hose, bulkhead, valve, and fitting you touched for leaks.
