Start with the problem, not the animal. Then confirm readiness, compare useful roles and tradeoffs, add conservatively, and watch what happens. Sometimes the best answer is to wait and buy nothing.

Not Every Mess Needs an Animal

A cleanup animal may help manage accessible food or growth, but it cannot correct excess nutrients, poor source water, unsuitable lighting, overfeeding, weak maintenance, unstable conditions, or a misidentified pest.

If you cannot identify the job and the food, do not buy the worker.

What different cleanup crew animals actually do

Match the Animal to the Job

These are useful examples, not a shopping list for every tank. Check the exact species, adult size, diet, habitat, and compatibility before you buy.

Glass and rock film

Small surface-grazing snails

Trochus, cerith, nerite, and similar snails can occupy different surfaces and eat different growth. The exact species matters more than the word “snail.”

  • Match the grazer to the visible growth and reachable surface
  • Check whether it can right itself and whether the tank has exposed openings
  • Provide only as many grazers as the aquarium can continue to feed

Tradeoff: once the easy growth declines, the aquarium may no longer support the same number of grazers.

Sand surface and leftovers

Snails and conchs that work around the sand

Nassarius-type snails are scavengers, not algae erasers. Cerith-type snails may graze surfaces. Conchs can need substantially more mature sandbed area and food.

  • Identify whether the job is surface film, accessible meaty food, or maintenance
  • Check adult size, sand depth, usable footprint, and long-term food supply
  • Do not ask an animal to compensate for routine overfeeding

Tradeoff: a small or very clean sandbed can run out of appropriate food quickly.

Larger surfaces or tougher growth

Larger snails and urchins

Turbo-type snails and some urchins can be powerful grazers, but their appetite, adult size, movement, and bulldozing potential make them a poor automatic choice for every aquarium.

  • Confirm the exact growth is part of the animal’s natural diet
  • Compare adult size with the aquarium and rockwork
  • Secure loose coral and expect some animals to carry or move objects

Tradeoff: strong grazing can become a feeding problem after the visible growth is reduced.

Accessible leftovers

Small hermit crabs

Hermits may scavenge and pick at surfaces, but they are opportunistic animals. Species, shell supply, hunger, and individual behavior affect compatibility.

  • Confirm the exact species rather than buying a mixed “hermit” label
  • Provide appropriate spare shells without treating shells as a guarantee
  • Watch interactions with snails and other vulnerable animals

Tradeoff: useful scavenging does not remove predation or aggression risk.

Targeted problem, not default crew

Emerald crabs and peppermint shrimp

These animals are often marketed as solutions for bubble algae or Aiptasia, but identity and individual behavior matter. Results are not guaranteed, and reef-safety tradeoffs remain.

  • Confirm the pest and the animal’s exact identity
  • Use a broader control plan instead of depending on one predator
  • Plan what happens after the target food declines

One quick distinction: their primary home will be Other Invertebrates; this hub mentions them only where a targeted job creates overlap.

Not routine cleanup livestock

Ornamental and special-care invertebrates

Cleaner and fire shrimp, starfish, brittle or serpent stars, cucumbers, sea apples, and sea slugs should not be bundled into a beginner cleanup crew simply because they lack a backbone.

  • Many have specialized feeding, maturity, habitat, or compatibility needs
  • Some have high-consequence failure modes
  • Choose them for their own husbandry fit, not to fill a cleanup category

Skip the animals-per-gallon rule

Start Small and Let the Tank Tell You What It Needs

Tank size matters, but two tanks with the same number of gallons can have completely different amounts of algae, film, leftover food, sand, and grazing space. That is why a simple animals-per-gallon formula does not work.

The goal is not the largest crew the aquarium can hold. It is the smallest sensible addition that can do the demonstrated job without running out of food.

2. Estimate usable food and habitatConsider the affected area, how quickly food returns, and whether the animal can safely reach it.

Know the Downsides Before You Buy

The words “reef safe” and “cleanup crew” do not tell you everything. Think about what the animal will eat after the obvious problem is gone, how large it gets, and whether it may bother anything else in your tank.

This section is for animals you are adding mainly to help with a specific maintenance job. Shrimp, crabs, starfish, cucumbers, and other invertebrates may be wonderful animals, but many of them belong in a different guide because their care goes well beyond cleanup.
