HelloReef 15-Gallon Aquarium Kit: An Honest Beginner Review
Out of my three recommended beginner paths, the HelloReef kit is by far and away the most guided. Included with the kit are over 50 step-by-step videos that I helped make with the team at HelloReef. There is no other saltwater aquarium kit on the market that comes even close to the amount of gear included with this kit. You really only need to purchase water and your animals to get started. What it is
A real 15-gallon all-in-one kit—not just a glass box
The aquarium is a rimless 15-inch cube with a rear filtration chamber. The kit includes almost everything you need to not only get started, but to keep you going for several months. There are a few additional purchases you might want to make as an upgrade or to make your life easier. But this is a really well-thought-out kit.
All of the included gear is one of the things that makes it different from a lot of starter kits. The other thing is the included HelloReef Connect course, which I helped make and includes over 50 step-by-step videos. There’s a reason this is the best-selling aquarium at Bulk Reef Supply. A closer look
The included equipment that matters most
The light
The kit includes a 12-inch AquaIllumination Blade LED light. One of the nicest things about the Blade on this cube is that it sits directly on the aquarium with the included feet, so you do not immediately need another mounting system. The exact model name has varied across official listings, so verify the current BRS description before you buy.
Filtration and flow
The rear chamber keeps the filtration out of the main display. You get a Sicce Micra Plus return pump, a separate Sicce Nano circulation pump, a filter sock, sponges, biological media, and activated carbon. I would buy extra filter socks because one sock is not enough for a comfortable wash-and-rotate routine.
Salinity and temperature tools
The refractometer and stick-on thermometer are simple, but useful. Calibrate the refractometer correctly and check salinity consistently. The included 50W Sicce preset heater covers the basic heating job, although a controller or other temperature safeguard can be a worthwhile optional upgrade depending on the room.
Rock, sand, bacteria, and salt
The kit includes the physical pieces you need to create the aquascape and start the biological foundation: LifeRock, live sand, epoxy, nitrifying bacteria, and an initial salt supply. That saves several separate shopping decisions, but you still need to follow a real fishless cycling plan and test before livestock.
The quick answer
Is the HelloReef kit worth it for a beginner?
If you want a compact saltwater aquarium and you also want somebody to walk you through the entire process in order, yes—I think this is one of the best beginner options available. The equipment bundle is good. The real difference, though, is the course.
I made the course, so obviously I am not pretending to be a completely neutral stranger here. But I also know exactly what is in it. The complete HelloReef course contains more than 50 videos covering the setup and the first weeks of the aquarium. That is far more detail than I can reasonably put into one article.
That does not mean this is the right tank for everybody. Fifteen gallons still limits your livestock choices. You still have to maintain it. You still need purified water, testing supplies, a safe location, and money for ongoing care. If you want the absolute cheapest entry point, look at the DeskMate. If you want more fish and more room to grow, look at the JBJ RF-45.

The part people miss
What is not included?
The bundle gets you a long way, but you are still building and caring for a living saltwater aquarium. Before you click Buy, make room in the plan for these items.
You need these before setup
- A stable, level stand or piece of furniture rated for roughly 165 pounds
- Purified RO/DI water or a reliable place to buy it
- A safe electrical plan with drip loops and appropriate GFCI protection
You need to budget for ongoing care
- Livestock added only when the tank is ready
- Replacement salt, food, filter socks or media, and test reagents
- Water-change and maintenance tools
- Electricity and replacement equipment
- Room for the occasional unexpected expense
The honest review
What I like—and what I would think about twice
Why I like it
- The equipment is matched to one specific aquarium.
- The light, flow, rock, sand, salt, and many small setup items are already accounted for.
- The 15-inch cube is compact without being as unforgiving as a sub-5-gallon nano.
- The complete course gives a first-time owner a real order of operations.
- The setup can grow into a very attractive clownfish, coral, and eventually anemone aquarium.
Where it is limited
- Fifteen gallons still gives you a limited fish list.
- The stand, water source, complete testing plan, and ongoing supplies are separate.
- The included heater is preset; some people will want more temperature control.
- The complete first-year cost will be higher than the kit price.
Optional upgrades
These are the pump upgrades, maintenance tools, test kits, and automation I would consider for the HelloReef. The Axis 20 and Nero 3 are controllable DC pumps that you can adjust and program through the Mobius app.
HelloReef 15-gallon cabinet stand
If you want a dedicated cabinet for your HelloReef, this stand is designed to fit the 15-gallon aquarium. It gives you two shelves for storing maintenance tools and supplies, plus a cord cutout to help keep everything tidy. The stand is sold separately from the aquarium kit.
AquaIllumination Axis 20 return pump
The Axis 20 is the return pump upgrade I would use for this tank. It delivers up to 185 gallons per hour, and I like its compact size for the rear filtration chamber. The quiet DC motor helps reduce the vibration noise that can bother me with an AC pump, and Mobius lets you adjust the output and set up a feeding mode.
AquaIllumination Nero 3 wavemaker
The Nero 3 is my choice for upgrading the water movement inside the display. I like its small size and broad flow for the HelloReef. It is a controllable DC pump with up to 2,000 gallons per hour of flow, so start at a low setting in this 15-gallon tank and adjust it to suit your animals. Use Mobius to change the intensity, choose a flow pattern, and create a schedule.
Flipper Float Nano Algae Scraper
This compact magnetic cleaner lets you scrub and scrape the glass without putting your hand in the tank. The wet side floats if it detaches; keep the cleaning surfaces free of trapped sand.
Continuum Aquatics 15-inch AquaBlade Aquarium Scraper
A handheld scraper is useful for stubborn algae and spots that are harder to reach with a magnetic cleaner. Choose the glass-tank version for the HelloReef aquarium.
Python 2-inch Pro-Clean Gravel Wash
Use this siphon to remove water and clean a small portion of the sand bed during water changes. Choose the 2-inch Medium version and control the flow carefully so you do not remove too much water from this 15-gallon tank.
API Saltwater Master Test Kit
This kit tests ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and high-range pH. Use the ammonia and nitrite tests to follow the nitrogen cycle before adding your first animals.
Hanna Alkalinity Checker
The HI772 gives you a digital alkalinity reading in dKH instead of a color chart to interpret. Use it to track alkalinity consistently as your reef grows.
Hanna Nitrate Checker
The HI782 High Range Nitrate Checker gives you a digital nitrate reading for routine nutrient testing. Record the results so you can follow changes over time.
Hanna Phosphate Checker
The HI713 Low Range Phosphate Checker measures phosphate with a digital readout. This is the low-range model, not the ultra-low-range checker, and it is useful for keeping track of nutrients alongside nitrate.
Inkbird ITC-308S dual-stage temperature controller
This controller adds an extra layer of protection by switching the heater off if the water gets too warm. It has separate heating and cooling outlets, plus high- and low-temperature alarms. This is the ITC-308S model, not the Wi-Fi version.
Tunze Osmolator 3 Nano auto top-off
The Osmolator 3 Nano uses an optical sensor to replace evaporated water automatically, helping keep salinity steady without daily manual top-offs. Put the sensor in the return-pump chamber and use a separate reservoir filled with RO/DI or distilled water—not saltwater. The pump and tubing are included; the reservoir is not.
Common questions
HelloReef aquarium kit FAQs
Does the HelloReef kit include the stand?
No. The aquarium kit does not include a stand. Make sure whatever supports it is level, water-resistant, and rated for an aquarium that weighs about 165 pounds when filled.
Does the HelloReef kit include a lid?
Yes. The HelloReef aquarium kit includes a lid.
Can I keep an anemone in it immediately?
No. Buying a clownfish-and-anemone kit does not make a brand-new aquarium mature. Cycle the tank, build stability, and wait until the aquarium is genuinely ready for the animal.
Is 15 gallons big enough for a beginner?
Yes, if your livestock plan fits the tank and you can maintain it consistently. It gives you more room than a tiny nano, but it is still a small aquarium with limited fish choices.
Is the complete HelloReef course free on this website?
No. I can give you a useful public overview, but the complete course with more than 50 videos comes with the eligible HelloReef kit.
