Weekly & Biweekly Saltwater Aquarium Maintenance

Your aquarium does not need every maintenance job every Saturday morning. It needs a repeatable routine—and a little common sense about what is actually dirty, full, drifting, or due.

Use this as your starting point, then let your test results, equipment, livestock, and the way your tank behaves adjust the schedule.

Before you put your hands in the tank

Get Everything Ready First

I would rather spend five minutes gathering what I need than stop halfway through a water change with a heater exposed, a wet floor, and no clean towel.

Testing suppliesUse only the tests that answer a real question for your tank. Bring your log, calibration fluid if needed, clean sample containers, and a towel.
Cleaning suppliesSet out the right glass or acrylic tool, clean filter media, a waste container, aquarium-only brushes, and anything your specific filter or skimmer requires.
Replacement waterIf a water change is due, mix the saltwater before you begin. Confirm the salinity and temperature before the old aquarium water comes out.

Here is the order I would use

The Weekly Saltwater Aquarium Maintenance Routine

Most weeks, this takes me somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes. A water change, a dirty filter sock, or a skimmer that needs attention can make it longer. A clean, stable tank can make it much shorter.

Test before you change the aquarium

If you plan to test the water and perform a water change on the same day, take the aquarium-water samples first. Otherwise, you are measuring the fresh saltwater you just added instead of learning what happened in the tank during the week.

Test the water and write down the results

You do not need to test every possible parameter every week. Test the numbers that help you make a decision. In a newer tank, that may include ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. In a stocked reef tank, alkalinity, nitrate, phosphate, and salinity usually tell me much more.

Write the results down. A single number is a snapshot. A log tells you whether alkalinity is slowly falling, nutrients are creeping upward, or the tank has been stable for two months.

If a result surprises you, repeat it before dosing, changing a large amount of water, or making another major correction. Check the test instructions, expiration date, sample size, reagent, and measuring tool.

Pay attention to:a trend outside your normal range, livestock behavior that does not match the result, a value that changed suddenly, and any test you cannot reproduce.

Salinity belongs here too. Check it weekly and any time you mix replacement water, troubleshoot an ATO, correct a top-off mistake, or see unexplained drift. Verify that the instrument is clean and calibrated the way its manufacturer requires.

Clean the viewing panel—without scratching it

Clean only the film and deposits that are present. Use a tool made for glass or acrylic, and keep sand away from magnet cleaners, pads, and blades. One grain of sand is all it takes to drag a permanent scratch across the aquarium.

Work around seams carefully. If the growth is hard, do not solve that by forcing the wrong tool against the panel. Use the right scraper and take your time.

Pay attention to:sand trapped in the cleaner, growth near seams, hardened deposits, scratched acrylic, and algae that returns so quickly that cleaning alone is not the answer.

A clean panel can wait. If you can see clearly and nothing is hardening near the seams or equipment, move on. If the same growth returns immediately, use the nuisance algae guide to identify it.

Service the mechanical filtration

Filter floss, sponges, filter socks, and roller mats all catch waste before it breaks down in the aquarium. That only helps when you remove the waste from the system.

  • Filter floss: replace it when it is loaded or water begins bypassing it.
  • Reusable sponge: rinse the mechanical sponge in removed aquarium water or follow the product instructions. Do not accidentally treat permanent biological media like disposable floss.
  • Filter sock: swap in a clean sock before the dirty one overflows or bypasses. Clean and store reusable socks safely.
  • Roller mat: check the roll, water level, sensor, and advance mechanism. Follow the manufacturer’s setup and replacement directions.

Pay attention to:dark or packed media, rising chamber water, bypass, lower flow, odor, visible trapped food and waste, or a roller alert.

Your tank decides the interval. A heavily fed tank may load mechanical media in a few days. A lightly stocked aquarium may take longer. Inspect it at least twice a week until you know the pattern.

Empty and clean the skimmer cup—if you use one

Turn the skimmer off, remove the cup without spilling the contents back into the system, empty it, and clean the cup and neck. A dirty neck can interfere with the foam head even when the cup is not completely full.

Check any drain line, external waste container, float switch, or overflow protection. Put the cup back correctly, restart the skimmer, and confirm that it begins operating normally.

Pay attention to:a full cup, a thick dirty neck, a blocked drain, wet versus dry skimming, unusual odor, a failed float, or a skimmer that immediately overflows after restart.

No skimmer? Skip this step. A successful beginner aquarium does not automatically require a protein skimmer. Deep cleaning the skimmer body and pump belongs in the monthly or as-needed routine.

Perform the water change when it is due

A weekly or every-other-week water change is a good starting point, not a law. I adjust the interval and amount using nutrient trends, stocking, feeding, other export methods, and what the aquarium actually needs.

Prepare replacement water with clean purified water and aquarium-only equipment. Follow the salt manufacturer’s mixing instructions, then verify salinity and temperature before the new water reaches livestock. Never add dry salt directly to a stocked aquarium.

When removing aquarium water, siphon accessible detritus where it has accumulated. Do not churn the entire sandbed because the calendar says “clean substrate.” The tank’s age, sand depth, animals, and the amount of debris all matter.

Pay attention to:matched salinity and temperature, heaters or pumps that could run dry, visible detritus, livestock stress, unexpected residue or odor in mixed water, and every piece of equipment that must be restarted.

Do not use a water change as a reflex. It is an excellent maintenance tool, but it does not diagnose every problem. Know why you are doing it and verify the tank afterward.

Finish with the equipment, ATO, and supplies

Take one last pass around the easy-to-reach equipment. Check the ATO reservoir, tubing, visible cords and plugs, intakes, air lines, salt creep, food, dosing containers, test reagents, and anything else you rely on during the week.

Confirm that every heater, pump, skimmer, controller, and filter you turned off is running again. Look at the water level and listen to the aquarium before walking away.

Pay attention to:a low reservoir, kinked tube, loose plug, damaged visible cord, blocked intake, empty supply, abnormal heat, new noise, leak, or equipment that did not restart.

Keep this inspection quick. Deep pump cleaning, rear-chamber or sump cleaning, media replacement, calibration, and equipment service belong in the monthly, quarterly, or condition-triggered routines.

Start with a weekly check. Once you know the tank’s normal pattern, some jobs may move earlier and others may move later.

Test and inspect more often when the aquarium is new, livestock or equipment was added, dosing changed, a maintenance week was missed, or a problem is underway.

Heavy feeding, larger fish, strong lighting, small water volume, visible debris, loaded filter media, wet skimming, and unstable nutrients can shorten the interval.

Earn more time

The tank has been stable for a while

A mature aquarium can move some jobs later only after the test log, filtration load, and equipment performance show that the longer interval is working.

Do it when due

Clean it when it is actually dirty

Clean the panel when growth is present. Change mechanical media when it is loaded. Empty the skimmer before it overflows. Refill the reservoir before it runs dry.

Manufacturer instructions matter

Roller filters, skimmers, test kits, salinity tools, and salt mixes are not all maintained the same way. Use the instructions for the product you own.

Write it down

Do not rely on memory

A short log shows whether the new interval worked. Record test results, water changes, media service, unusual observations, and equipment changes.

Double-Check It Before You Fix It

One of the fastest ways to create a second problem is to make a big correction based on one questionable test result.

Repeat the testUse a clean sample, reread the instructions, check the reagent and expiration date, and repeat the measurement before dosing or replacing a large amount of water.
Look at the animalsA number matters, but so does the aquarium in front of you. Check breathing, appetite, coral appearance, behavior, temperature, salinity, and equipment.

The basic order stays the same, but the jobs that take the most time will change with the tank you own.

Weekly Aquarium Maintenance FAQ

Do I need to change the water every week?

Weekly is a useful starting point, but it is not a universal rule. Use nutrient and chemistry trends, stocking, feeding, other export methods, and the way your aquarium responds to choose the interval and amount.

Which water tests should I run every week?

Test the parameters that will actually tell you what to do next. In a new aquarium, cycling tests matter. In an established reef, alkalinity, nitrate, phosphate, and salinity often tell you more. Your livestock, dosing, and current problem may change that list.

How often should I replace filter floss or clean a filter sock?

Inspect mechanical filtration at least twice a week until you learn the tank’s pattern. Service it when it is loaded, water starts bypassing it, flow drops, or the equipment alerts you. Heavy feeding may shorten the interval.

Do I have to clean a protein skimmer every week?

Inspect the cup several times a week and clean it before it fills or the dirty neck reduces performance. A wet-skimming system or small cup may need attention sooner. Deep cleaning the body and pump is a separate job.

Should I vacuum the entire sandbed during every water change?

No. Remove accessible detritus where it accumulated, but do not blindly disturb an entire established sandbed. Tank age, sand depth, animals, flow, and the amount of debris all change the right method.

What should I do if one test result is suddenly very different?

Repeat it before making a large correction. Check the instructions, sample, reagent, expiration date, calibration, units, and measuring tool. Then compare the result with your log, livestock, and equipment.
